Bulgaria opened its doors to international tourism in the 60s
The Bulgarian seaside resorts of Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Albena and others are more popular than ever. After the democratic reformations at the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s the Bulgarian resorts underwent many structural changes and a process of privatization started a chain of massive investment and improvements.

The resort is the best known of the famous Bulgarian seaside resorts. It is 95km south of Varna, 36 km north of Bourgas and in close proximity to the pretty town of Nessebar. Access from to Sunny Beach is still via 'The Black Sea Highway' and the main road between Bourgas and Varna which is still the main link to the resort; Bourgas Airport is 30km from the resort; Bourgas Railway Station is 40 km from the port, sea terminal and marina in Nessebar.
The landscape
The main development of Sunny Beach is bordered by mountains with the Black Sea to the east and the new residential districts of Nessebar to the South. The sandy beaches are gently sloping with no sudden drops. Made up of fine golden sand the beach strip is 6.5km long and 40 -50m wide on average. The many dunes leading on to the beach area form a natural nature reserve of some 86 hectares.

The Climate
June to September is generally sunny with a minimum of overcast days. The average temperatures are between 27 and 30c in summer with water temperatures being between25-28c. The tourist season lasts around 5 months. The resort area of Sunny Beach has had a capacity of around 25,000 beds, but this is expanding rapidly as the infrastructure is enhanced and improved. Many new hotels are planned along with the development of the new small tourist complexes.
Golden Sands
The Golden Sands resort is situated at 17km from Varna known as the 'Pearl of the Black Sea coast'. The international airport of Varna is 27km away. Golden Sands is an area known for its pretty woodland, wide golden beaches and clear blue sea. A Bulgarian national park surrounds the resort. The beach strip is 3.5km long.
Promosko
Is a small town located on the south shore of the Black Sea, about 50km from the major city of Bourgas. Promosko is located on the main peninsula and is known as one of the sunniest places in Bulgaria. The picturesque bay and unusual rocks along with the sandy dunes and warm sea water are only part of the attraction of this beautiful area. The protected reserves and natural landmarks of the Ropotamo River are all features of this charming town located on 5km from the beach and surrounded by oak woodland.
